University of Michigan Launches Mcity to Test Self-Driving Cars

JACKSON, Mich. – Recently, Ford Motor Co. did away with any speculation surrounding its efforts to produce an autonomous vehicle and got down to business. It turns out the automaker is moving closer to autonomous vehicle development and expects to have a model ready in the not-so-distant future.

Coincidentally, the University of Michigan launched Mcity to test self-driving cars in July 2015. As the university put it, Mcity is a controlled environment designed to grow an understanding of and the development of connected and automated vehicle technologies that could pave the way for driverless cars.

The 32-acre testing ground, located on U­–M's North Campus Research Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., replicates urban and suburban environments through a system of roads that adds up to 5 miles and includes intersections, roundabouts, roadway markings, and traffic signs and signals. To make the simulation as accurate as possible, Mcity also includes sidewalks, bus facilities, benches, simulated buildings, streetlights, parked cars, robotic pedestrians, and random obstructions like construction barriers.

According to the university, U–M’s Mobility Transformation Center (MTC) team was carried out the design and development of Mcity to test self-driving cars. MTC is an alliance of the U­–M Transportation Research Institute, the College of Engineering, a number of automotive companies, and the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Thanks to U–M’s deep interest in contributing research to the future of autonomous vehicles, companies like Ford will have another vantage point to gain insight from as it continues to move forward in the development of its own autonomous vehicle technology. Ford Uses Space Shuttle Technology to Reinvent the Wheel

JACKSON, Mich.– The Ford Shelby® GT350R Mustang is Ford’s highest performing track-ready Mustang ever produced and it needs high-performance wheels to keep up with its insanity, which is why Ford used Space Shuttle technology to reinvent the wheel for this surprisingly street-legal pony car.

To give the GT350R a set of wheels that can truly handle the heat, Ford Performance developed a carbon fiber wheel that is coated in ceramic plasma arc spray– the same material used on the Space Shuttle. The coating protects the wheels from intense brake heat, granting more durability as well as a sleek finish.

Although Ford used Space Shuttle technology to reinvent the wheel, aftermarket manufacturers already produce carbon fiber wheels. However, Ford is the first automotive manufacturer to utilize the technology at a scale of mass-production for the GT350R.

Carbon fiber wheels are unique because they improve suspension response times and chassis performance, cut down on weight, and enhance steering and ride quality. The carbon fiber wheel meets Ford’s highest standards for durability, quality, craftsmanship and finish, so we’re betting you would feel quite a difference between it and your vehicle’s current wheels.

Ford’s wheels already go through a brutal testing process that covers curb strikes, UV and chemical exposure, and broiling heat, proving their dependability. The GT350R’s carbon fiber wheels go through the same testing, but they are stiffer, lighter and more resilient so they greater chance at withstanding abrasive elements or the impact of an occasional curb hop.

To produce a carbon fiber wheel, Ford uses a preformed internal carbon structure formed of woven carbon strands. Then an RFID chip with a specific tracking number is implanted in the structure and it is entered into a quality assurance system. The structure is infused with resin and cured at high temperatures before receiving the high-gloss black coating that gives it thermal protection.

The entire process renders a whole wheel, rather than one composed of various parts and structures welded and bonded together. The wholeness of the carbon fiber wheel strengthens it and proves to be much more durable than a typical aluminum wheel.

Ford Patents 11-Speed Transmission

JACKSON, Mich. – Why bother with an 8-speed, 9-speed, or even 10-speed when you can do the unthinkable with an 11-speed automatic transmission? You heard that right. Eleven Speed Automatic Transmission. You're probably thinking, but an 11-speed transmission doesn't even exist. YET. Ford just patented an 11-speed automatic transmission!

While exciting details regarding the transmission's capability and specifications are still super mysterious, the news alone that Ford Motor Company applied for a patent on an 11-speed transmission gets our heart rate pumping. With their 10-speed automatic, Ford partnered with General Motors on the transmission's development, but with the 11-speed it looks like Ford is going solo. The patent application indicates the use of planetary gearsets, which leads us to believe the 11-speed will be a conventional, torque-converter automatic.

In the name of the game, we now get to wait it out until additional details are released. But we definitely can't wait to get our hands on more information because more gears means more efficiency! Stay tuned!

Lincoln Continental Production to Begin in 2016

JACKSON, Mich. – The Lincoln Continental Concept made its official debut at the New York International Auto Show and it hasn't left the spotlight since! An exciting moment for those tried and true fans of the classic Continental, but the new concept also appeals to modern tastes with its uber luxurious interior and speculated specifications. Aluminum 2015 Ford F-150 Loses Weight All Over

JACKSON, Mich. – By now when you hear 2015 Ford F-150 you likely immediately think: aluminum body. The new Ford Motor Company pickup truck has made all sorts of headlines after dropping 700 pounds; a dramatic weight loss that has been attributed to the truck's use of aluminum rather than steel. While a huge portion of the F-150's weight loss is thanks to the aluminum body, there are also a few other areas throughout the truck that Ford was able to save a few pounds.

Through the use of aluminum body panels, the 2015 Ford F-150 lost a whopping 450 lbs., which means the truck shed weight in many other areas as well to achieve a total slim down of 700 lbs. But where? Comprising the remaining 250 pounds, the 2015 Ford F-150 dropped weight in the front bumper structure, steering knuckles, magnesium four wheel drive exterior transfer case, mechanical parking break, and in the rear differential, as well as through the use of high-strength steel which allows the truck to use less of the material without compromising quality. But Ford didn't stop there. Weight was shed from the interior as well in the front seat system, rear seat, and dashboard underpinnings.

Ford and Microsoft's Partnership Continues with SYNC 3

JACKSON, Mich. - While Microsoft will no longer be overseeing Ford's operating network for their latest infotainment system, they still will be contributing to SYNC 3 as cloud-support that will work to remotely update the systems within all Ford and Lincoln vehicles.

Ford and Microsoft's partnership continues with SYNC 3, Ford's latest infotainment system that will soon replace MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch come this summer. Microsoft's Azure global cloud-based network will serve vehicle owners by wirelessly upgrading their SYNC 3 systems. Customers will not even realize that the software was updated until they receive a notification that the upgrade is complete.

Along with the seamless upgrading tactics, Microsoft's cloud will also make it possible for drivers to complete some remote activities like starting the vehicle or checking the fuel gauge. Thanks to Ford and Microsoft continued partnership, Ford SYNC 3 will recognize vehicle owners use of the system as well as their driving habits. Ford is hoping that with this obtainable information and their continued relationship with Microsoft, they will be able to provide customers with an even broader array of connectivity services.

Given the various resorts of glitches with Ford's previous SYNC system, the automaker opted to use Blackberry's QNX on-board operating system this time around. SYNC 3 will feature a simpler layout, larger fonts, and a easy-to-use touchscreen that can swipe up, down, or across. All Ford vehicles within the United States are expected to be equipped with the new system by the end of 2016, followed by the rest of the Ford vehicles around the globe by 2018.

Ford Teams with Petty's Garage to Produce Limited-Edition Mustang GT

JACKSON, Mich. - Back in 2008 a Level Cross shop by the name of Petty's Garage opened its doors in North Carolina, specializing in restorations on race car chassis from owner and driver Richard Petty's personal collection. This business quickly transformed into a high-performance speed shop, focusing on bringing "The King's" winning tradition to a variety of performance automobiles. Petty's Garage recently attended the annual SEMA show where they unveiled their own version of the Mustang GT. After receiving nothing but positive feedback from attendees, Ford decided to team with Petty's Garage to produce a fastback limited-edition Mustang GT.

We weren't kidding when we said that this Mustang GT will be a limited-edition. There are only 100 units of the Stage 1 model and an even more exclusive 43 units of the Stage 2 model available. Both versions of the Mustang GT will be built this year and feature a 5.0-liter Ford Racing/Roush supercharger engine underneath the hood, which is expected to produce a massive 627 horsepower! The Stage 1 and Stage 2 models both feature 20-inch Petty's Garage HRE FlowForm wheels, a MagnaFlow exhaust system, and a variety of other customized characteristics. Inside of the limited-edition Mustang GT are embroidered head restraints, floor mats, and a signature on the dashboard from "The King" himself, Richard Petty.

Stage 2 contains all of the same features that are found on the Stage 1 model, but of course, offers consumers a few additional perks. Stage 2 includes a Petty's Garage Wilwood big brake upgrade, a complete Petty's Garage custom two-toned paint job, and Petty's Garage HRE three-piece forged-aluminum wheels! If the Stage 2 sounds the model for you, you'll have to act fast! The first of the 43 available units has already been sold to Brian Johnson of AC/DC. Ford teamed with Petty's Garage to produce a limited-edition Mustang GT that could take even the biggest of rockstar's breaths away. Johnson, who had never owned an American car, said that Petty's Garage limited-edition Mustang GT is "one of the best cars he's ever driven".

New Ford Focus RS to Feature New Stability Control Technology

JACKSON, Mich. - We have said it before and we will say it again, the Ford Focus RS line has been known to raise the bar when it comes to performance and technology. After the debut of the new Ford Focus RS, which will be going on sale in the United States for the first time ever later this year, we knew it was only a matter of time before Ford would begin to leak some of the incredible technologies that the performance vehicle has to offer.

Well, Ford decided to make this possible for future drivers. Here is how it works. The technology detects the vehicle's speed, steering wheel position, and turn rate of the steering wheel to determine if a potential skid is on the horizon. If the vehicle identifies a risk, the brakes are applied to the individual wheels to help the driver keep control of the vehicle and stay on the road. The "recovery process" offered by this transitional stability system is put into motion at an incredibly rapid pace, resulting in smoother, refined control. 

The new Ford Focus RS will feature a new stability control technology that combines real-time data from sensors placed throughout the vehicle to predict potential spinouts roughly 100 to 200 milliseconds before they occur. This technology will be a standard on the Focus and is just one of the several control innovations that Ford has developed to improve driving dynamics on the latest Ford Focus RS model.
