Ford-Loving Farmers Cut Corn Maze Into the Shape of an F-150

JACKSON, Mich. –– One of the most traditional fall activities for families to have fun with is visiting a local corn maze, but this year you might want to head out of state to Napolean, Ohio, to navigate these Ford-loving farmers’ corn maze cut into the shape of an F-150.

The seven-acre corn maze at Leaders Farms was carefully cut into an image of the the latest edition of the Ford F-150, and it’s about as close as corn comes to imitating the aluminum alloy, half-ton pickup.

When the owners of Leaders Farms decided to use the F-150 as their corn maze theme this fall, they weren’t simply being whimsical. “We are a multi-generation Ford-driving family,” said Kristin Leaders.

Leaders’ husband Brad is just as much a genuine Ford fanatic as her. After seeing the most recent F-150 design in a magazine, he decided it would be a perfect tribute to the automaker and an expression of his passion for the pickup.

But carving the image of an F-150 into a cornfield is no easy task. It’s a year-round process of planning, designing, and maintaining the field. When it actually comes down to creating the image, the Leaders’ had to incorporate GPS technologies that enabled them to carve a precise image.

The Ford-loving farmers cut their corn maze into the shape of an F-150, but the Ford theme doesn’t end there. Leaders Farms also puts on a show with Big Jack, a pumpkin cannon mounted to the chassis of a restored Ford F-450. For extra fun, Leaders Farms also takes care of 13 goats, 40 cows, and their barnyard dog Scout.

Ford Makes 2015 F-150 More Aerodynamic

JACKSON, Mich.– A vehicle’s attainable gas mileage tends to take precedence in the hierarchy of pros and cons when today’s drivers are looking for their next vehicle, but a high number of miles per gallon is difficult to find in even the most modern pickup models.

Wind drag is a damaging factor that reduces gas mileage, especially for large vehicles like the 2015 Ford F-150. Thankfully, Ford makes the 2015 F-150 more aerodynamic than any other pickup, which means the it gets some truly remarkable gas mileage for being such a tough truck.

Here’s how wind drag works: The more exposed a truck’s wheels are, the more wind drag is produced, which results in awful gas mileage. Blocking off the wheels with skirts helps smooth out the airflow, but it’s not really a feasible or appealing solution, chiefly for a pickup like the F-150 (put wheel skirts on it and you may as well be driving a Prius, which means you shouldn’t be driving an F-150).

Ford makes the 2015 F-150 more aerodynamic with a streamlined design called air curtains that direct air from the front of the truck into horizontal slots underneath the headlamps. The air travels through ducts that open into the wheel wells so the air effortlessly flows across the outer faces of the wheels and alongside the truck.

Rather than implementing literal wheel skirts, the narrowly targeted force of air acts as a skirt in itself to curtail wind drag. This keeps your gas mileage up where you want it to be, and preserves your F-150’s fully exposed alloy wheels that add to its tough image.

The F-150’s streamlining air curtains, which debuted on the all-new Mustang, allow it to achieve the best-in-class gasoline EPA-estimated rating of 19 miles per gallon in the city and 26 mpg highway with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost® V6 engine. Other aerodynamic design advancements also add to the 2015 F-150’s improved gas mileage, including:

• A Flush-mounted windshield that eliminates the need for molding, which disturbs airflow
• A tailgate top that functions as a spoiler to help guide airflow from the roof and reduces backend turbulence
• A cargo box narrower than the cab but preserving its original volume, with a trim piece to prevent air from being trapped between it and the cab
• Rear corners and tail lamps that are meticulously shaped for air to neatly break off from, also reducing backend turbulence
