University of Michigan Launches Mcity to Test Self-Driving Cars

JACKSON, Mich. – Recently, Ford Motor Co. did away with any speculation surrounding its efforts to produce an autonomous vehicle and got down to business. It turns out the automaker is moving closer to autonomous vehicle development and expects to have a model ready in the not-so-distant future.

Coincidentally, the University of Michigan launched Mcity to test self-driving cars in July 2015. As the university put it, Mcity is a controlled environment designed to grow an understanding of and the development of connected and automated vehicle technologies that could pave the way for driverless cars.

The 32-acre testing ground, located on U–M's North Campus Research Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., replicates urban and suburban environments through a system of roads that adds up to 5 miles and includes intersections, roundabouts, roadway markings, and traffic signs and signals. To make the simulation as accurate as possible, Mcity also includes sidewalks, bus facilities, benches, simulated buildings, streetlights, parked cars, robotic pedestrians, and random obstructions like construction barriers.

According to the university, U–M’s Mobility Transformation Center (MTC) team was carried out the design and development of Mcity to test self-driving cars. MTC is an alliance of the U–M Transportation Research Institute, the College of Engineering, a number of automotive companies, and the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Thanks to U–M’s deep interest in contributing research to the future of autonomous vehicles, companies like Ford will have another vantage point to gain insight from as it continues to move forward in the development of its own autonomous vehicle technology. Ford Develops Screen to keep Spiders out of Your Car

JACKSON, Mich.– Have you ever met someone who actually likes spiders? The majority of people are so fearful of these 8-legged creepy crawlers that their anxiety could be classified as unhealthy. Unfortunately, if you have arachnophobia one of your worst nightmares just became a reality: Spiders could be nesting in your car. But don’t worry because Ford developed a screen to keep spiders out of your car.

The culprit is a ubiquitous North American house spider called the yellow sac spider that also happens to really like nesting in the fuel vapor lines of cars. Instead of spinning a web, the yellow sac spider prefers to construct cocoon-like shelters that happen to be thick enough to clog a fuel vapor line.

Blockages in fuel vapor lines can cause engine damage and slacken vehicle performance. That's why it's a big deal that Ford developed a screen to keep spiders out of your car's fuel vapor lines so air and vapor circulation for the vehicle’s carbon canister aren't impeded.

“Spiders can be a nuisance for our vehicle owners,” said David Gimby, Ford fuel systems engineer and the mastermind behind the spider screen. “We studied these species to discern how they nest, then designed an effective device for excluding the larger, problematic spiders from nesting in our cars.”

The screen will debut with the 2016 Focus RS, but eventually you’ll be spider-free once the technology is fully implemented into the Ford lineup. Thanks to Gimby’s tingling spidey sense and Ford’s drive to develop the most beneficial technology for their customers, you won’t get tangled up in anymore sticky situations with these yellow menaces.

It would be nearly impossible to stop spiders from crawling into your vehicle because their small and stealthy creatures. Thankfully Ford's spider screen will take care of that for you.
