JACKSON, Mich.–– Smart devices, Amazon Echo and Wink, are now subjects of interest to Ford. Ford will be exploring SYNC integration with smart home products that will make it easy to control their home and vehicle seamlessly.
Icontrol Networks reports that half of consumers say they will buy at least one smart home product in the next year, which creates an opportunity to make a seamless user experience between the car and home. Ford is working to link SYNC with home automation devices like Amazon Echo, which uses the cloud-based voice service Alexa. Using Amazon Echo, Ford owners could request actions like:
- Turn home lights on/off
- Control home security systems
- Open/Close garage doors
- Check and control thermostats
- Start/stop vehicle
- Lock/unlock vehicle
- Check car fuel and charge levels
- Provide vehicle location
From inside the car, Alexa would be accessed through the steering wheel controls and can be used to request things like weather reports, music, shopping lists, etc. There are currently over 15 million SYNC equipped vehicles on the road around the world today with 43 million estimated by 2020.
“Consumers increasingly want to stay connected to their homes while on the move,” said Don Butler, Ford executive director, Connected Vehicle and Services. “Linking smart devices like Amazon Echo and Wink to vehicles via SYNC would fulfill that desire, and allow consumers to connect with their vehicles even when they aren’t behind the wheel.”
Ford not only updated SYNC recently to include Apple Siri Eyes-Free to its capability, but is also continually innovating in EV solutions too. Paying attention to consumers wants and needs to create great, seamless user experiences is something Ford excels in.
