Ford Will Invest $4.5 Billion in Electrified Vehicle Solutions by 2020

JACKSON, Mich. –– In the spirit of changing vehicle experiences and bettering lives, Ford will invest $4.5 billion in electrified vehicle (EV) solutions by 2020. By the end of the decade, 13 new EV vehicles will be added to Ford's portfolio. This will be the largest-ever EV investment Ford has made in a five-year period.

First up on the list: the new Ford Focus Electric, which will be on its way to production late next year. The Focus Electric will be capable of an 80% charge in an estimated 30 minutes with a 100-mile projected range thanks to the all-new DC fast-charge capability, which is an estimated two hours faster than today's Focus Electric. Other features on the new Focus Electric include:

  • SmartGauge and EcoGuide LCD Instrument Cluster which provides real-time EV power usage and customizable displays
  • Agile steering and handling for a fun drive and a feeling of connectedness to the road
  • A system called Brake Coach to teach the driver how to use smooth braking which maximizes the energy captured through braking to return to the vehicle battery

All in response to shifting global trends of cleaner and more efficient vehicles, Ford will reimagine itself by focusing on customer experience. Product development process will also change to support the customer experience focus shift. Instead of just sketching, for instance, designers will also include full customer experience illustrations that will integrate hardware and software experiences.

“As both an auto and a mobility company, we at Ford are going further than just designing the product to move people from point A to point B,” said Raj Nair, executive vice president, Product Development. “We are considering the way customers interact with our vehicles as a unified experience, looking for ways to excite and delight customers and make their lives better.”

Ford is making an outstanding investment into a cleaner more efficient future not only for its nameplates but also for its customers. Ford will invest $4.5 billion in electrified vehicle solutions by 2020, but also has five electric vehicles that you can take advantage of now, including the Fusion Energi Titanium, which gets 40 city / 36 highway mpg.
