Ford Driving Skills for Life Summer Camp Helps Teens Drive Safe

Ford Driving Skills for Life Summer Camp Helps Teens Drive Safe

JACKSON, Mich.– You might think that Ford has its hands full with developing new automotive innovationspioneering technology and keeping the earth clean, but they’re also keen on helping young drivers safely adapt to the road.

The Ford Driving Skills for Life summer camp helps teens drive safe by teaching them safe driving tips often neglected in traditional driver’s education classes, like how you can control your vehicle when the roads are slick or what you should do when an obstruction like animals suddenly appears in your driving path. Teens will also learn about the consequences of impaired driving thanks to a suit and goggles that simulate driving under the influence.

Ford’s first ever DSFL tour for teens, in partnership with the Governors Highway Safety Association, will draw over 1,500 teens to the free camps taking place in six states beginning on July 7, in Fargo, N.D., then moving on to Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming through August. The camp stops will consist of four half-day sessions where each session will include the entire DSFL curriculum of vehicle handling, hazard recognition, speed management and space management.

According to the CDC, teen drivers are three times more likely than experienced drivers to die in a motor vehicle accident, which also happens to be the foremost cause of death for American teens. The six states chosen for the DSFL tour are known to have the highest percentage of high school teens ages 16 years or older who admit to drinking and driving.

It’s no coincidence that Ford scheduled the tour for a time of the year when teens are more at risk of getting in accidents, giving them knowledge they can readily use– another way Ford Driving Skills for Life summer camp helps teens drive safe.

Ford encourages parents to accompany their teens to the DSFL summer camps because of their massive influence on developing good driving habits in their children. Parents might also gain new knowledge on safe driving habits they’ve forgotten or weren’t aware of through hands-on ride-and-drive courses and classroom material.

We hope you and others are beginning to see a pattern of Ford’s involvement in local, national and international communities. Whether it’s through technology, strategic innovation or helping teens and adults become safer drivers, Ford is all about getting its hands dirty and driving communities forward with safety, and it shows through DSFL and vehicles like top safety rating vehicles like the 2015 Ford Edge!
