Ford Reduces Environmental Impact and Shapes Future Mobility

Ford Reduces Environmental Impact and Shapes Future Mobility

JACKSON, Mich.– As a company that manufactures environmentally friendly and energy efficient vehicles, it should be expected that Ford reduces environmental impact and shapes future mobility through other strategic initiatives.

Ford has taken a number of environmentally sound steps in the last few years, and one large step was towards reducing global waste-to-landfill. This year, Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly Plant in Mexico became Ford’s 27th zero waste-to-landfill plant.

Hermosillo's achievement means every Ford Mexico manufacturing plant is now landfill-free, pushing the company closer to its goal of reducing global waste-to-landfill by 40 percent per vehicle manufactured between 2011 and 2016, which the automaker previously reduced by 40 percent between 2007 and 2011.

Thanks to Ford’s efforts to make these manufacturing plants landfill-free, 1.5 million pounds of landfill waste have been diverted, 45 tons of plant cafeteria waste is used to enhance agricultural growth and community green areas around the plants, and solvents and scrap aluminum are being recycled, creating a series of closed-loop systems.

Achievements in Mexico aren’t the only way Ford reduces environmental impact and shapes future mobility. Ford is reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 30 percent per vehicle manufactured by 2025, and has already reduced water use by 30 percent per vehicle. In addition, Ford has spent $300 million in energy improvements on its global facilities, and is on track to reduce energy consumption by 25 percent per vehicle between 2011 and 2016. The list goes on: Ford’s use of REPREVE fiber will divert 5 million plastic bottles from landfills by integrating the recycled plastic into the 2015 F-150, making Ford the only automaker to use this specific solution to reduce its environmental impact.

Alongside its efforts to shape our future global environment, Ford developed Ford Smart Mobility, a plan that works to find solutions to societal issues such as:

  • Rapid urbanization and ensuing traffic congestion
  • Providing vehicles for a growing global middle class
  • Protecting health and air quality in developing nations
  • Adapting to shifting consumerism and priorities of Millennials
  • Conserving natural resources like energy, water and raw materials

These environmental and societal challenges are daunting tasks to tackle, but if anyone was going to find solutions to these problems it would be a company like Ford.
