JACKSON, Mich.– Despite the Ford Mustang’s popularity and
prowess as America’s first pony car, the Chevrolet Camaro has evidently had a
leg up in sales since 2009– that is until this year.
Thanks to a purchase increase of 55 percent, 2015 Ford Mustang sales leave Chevy Camaro in
the dust and our beloved pony car has once again pulled ahead of the
competition.
Into May 2015, Ford sold 56,571 Mustangs, while Chevy sold
33,983 Camaros and Dodge sold 30,166 Challengers, according to Autodata Corp.
With a new 50th-anniversary design and the debut of a 2.3-liter EcoBoost
four-cylinder engine, the Mustang galloped ahead of its competitors and
attracted an audience of younger consumers, namely in Southern California where
sales were up 117 percent, Ford said.
As the market fills with younger consumers, you shouldn’t be
surprised that 35 percent of Mustang buyers are millennials, according to Ford,
whereas last year only 30 percent were.
Naturally, the main reason 2015 Ford Mustang sales leave Chevy Camaro in the dust is the
Mustang’s attractive design and performance specs. The 2015 Mustang’s 2.3-liter
EcoBoost engine gives it 310 horsepower, yet it still attains 32 miles per
gallon on the highway, compared to the 305 horsepower and 31 mpg highway the
2014 model’s 3.7-liter V-6 supported.
It’s likely Ford will see a 40 percent sales increase in
June for the Mustang, assuming its sales continue trending upward, which will
help nudge the muscle-car into a best-seller slot for the first time in six
years.
