Think Outside the Lunchbox: 5 School Lunches That Aren’t PB&J

JACKSON, Mich. –– School will be back in session before you know it, parents, and you want to make this year unforgettable for your kid. Think outside the lunchbox with these 5 school lunches that aren’t PB&J.

When a kid sees a sandwich their first though isn’t “Yum!” They’re usually more concerned with the whole crust debacle causing their current lunch crisis, which averts them from enjoying the good stuff between the bread slices. If it’s tough to get your kid to eat their sandwich, try making pinwheels instead. That swirly center immediately entices a little human obsessed with whimsical shapes to chomp down. You can pack a bag of chips or pretzels and their favorite sweet treat to bring this fun lunch to a tasty culmination.

What’s every kid’s favorite food? Pizza, of course, so why not let your kid make their own masterpiece at the lunch table? Pack a plain bagel, pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella cheese, a few pepperonis, and any other toppings they like. Give them something sweet and healthy to munch on afterwards.

Beware; this idea could get a little messy, but it makes for a great lunch. Pack a bag of Fritos, some grilled meat, sour cream, and shredded lettuce. At lunch, your kid can mix together the contents within the Fritos bag. Voila! They have a walking taco. Make sure you include a spork (much cooler than a spoon or fork) and possibly an ice pack to keep the contents fresh for a couple of hours between the start of the school day and lunch. This would be another instance where a side of fruit might accompany the entrée well.

You’ll need a thermos for this one. Heat up however many chicken nuggets you think is appropriate for you kid. Immediately place them in a thermos and close it tight. The nuggets should keep warm until lunch. Include your kid’s favorite dipping sauce –– ranch, ketchup, and honey barbecue are all the rage. Include a sweet treat or fruit.

Take a break; it’s time to let your kid have the luck of the draw. Whatever the school is serving for lunch that day is what they get. Then again, most kids are picky eaters, and the last thing you want is for your kid not to eat lunch because they don’t like chicken cordon bleu or a sloppy joe from a lunch lady's spatula. It would be strategic to plan ahead which day it is your kid will take a school lunch.

A few of these may not work for your kid, but hopefully you’re more prepared to think outside the lunchbox with these 5 school lunches that aren’t PB&J when the school year rolls in.
