So while the current driver-assist features are helpful in reducing collisions with other vehicles, the new Ford safety technology with pedestrian detection prevents accidents with people! Through the use of a windshield-mounted camera and radar located near the bumped, the system can scan the roadway and provide an audible and visual warning to the driver if a possible collision is detected! This risk could be with a pedestrian crossing the street or even a vehicle in front of you. If the driver does not respond to the warning, the vehicle intervenes and improves braking responsiveness by reducing the space between the brake pads and disks, and then automatically applies full braking force if the driver does not respond!
Incorporating Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection into Ford Motor Company vehicles can drastically reduce the severity and even prevent certain forward collisions with other vehicles at all speeds and with pedestrians at lower speeds! And, it's even smart enough to distinguish the difference between pedestrians in the roadway and typical roadside scenery and objects!
Thanks to more than 300,000 miles of testing, Ford's new safety technology that works to detect and prevent pedestrians accidents is ready for real-world exposure! Europe's 2015 Ford Mondeo will be the first to receive the new technology before it expands to all other vehicles, so stay tuned for more information on when it will make it's way to the U.S.!
