Helpful Tips for Traveling With a Pet

Helpful Tips for Traveling With a Pet
JACKSON, Mich - Whether our furry friend is accompanying us for a trip to the local super market or over the river and through the woods to Grandma's house, we should always ensure that they remain safe while riding in our vehicle. Of course it would be ideal if our pets could just calmly sit on our lap and create no distractions, but we all know this situation is highly unlikely.

When it is time to make traveling decisions, choose what will be the safest and most comfortable for your animal. For instance, if you plan on driving for an extended amount of time or running errands when the weather conditions are extremely warm, it may be in your pet's best interest to stay at home. However, if you believe it is best to bring your furry family member along, here are some helpful tips for traveling with a pet:

  • Use a crate or carrier. Although many of us let it happen, dogs and cats really should not roam in the car. Using a crate or carrier that has been anchored to the vehicle is the best way to prevent distractions for the driver and protect your pet in case of a crash.
  • Make sure your pet has been well exercised before you start traveling. He or she will be more inclined to rest during the drive.
  • Bring their favorite blanket, bone, or toy along for the ride. A comforting and familiar item will help your pet to relax.
  • For all of the dog-owners, find all of the dog-friendly restaurants, hotels or dog parks that are on your route. It is important to let your pet take a break for a walk, drink of water and a snack, especially if there is a long drive ahead of you.
  • NEVER leave your pet in the vehicle alone. Even with the windows down on a warm day, the temperature inside of a vehicle can rise in just a matter of minutes. The same rule applies during the winter months when pets could experience hypothermia.
  • Prevent dehydration by packing a freezing bowl of water that your pet can lick to keep cool. This is a great, less messy alternative to traveling with bowls of water.
  • Keep your pet up to date on all vaccinations and depending on where your final destination is, get additional vaccines to protect them against any new threats.
