While exciting details regarding the transmission's capability and specifications are still super mysterious, the news alone that Ford Motor Company applied for a patent on an 11-speed transmission gets our heart rate pumping. With their 10-speed automatic, Ford partnered with General Motors on the transmission's development, but with the 11-speed it looks like Ford is going solo. The patent application indicates the use of planetary gearsets, which leads us to believe the 11-speed will be a conventional, torque-converter automatic.
In the name of the game, we now get to wait it out until additional details are released. But we definitely can't wait to get our hands on more information because more gears means more efficiency! Stay tuned!
