How to Take a 2015 Ford Mustang 1,000 Feet Above Manhattan

JACKSON, Mich - If you read our blog a few weeks ago, we mentioned the replication of a historic event taking place on top of the Empire State Building observation deck. In celebration of 50 years of Ford Mustang, Ford Motor Company is taking the 2015 to the top -and we mean to the very top. Now, the question is "How to Take a 2015 Ford Mustang 1,000 Feet Above Manhattan"? Cutting a Mustang into pieces isn't exactly easy, but Ford engineers and DST make it seem like a piece of cake.

First, Ford Engineers and the DST team sat down to make a plan. In order to take the 2015 Ford Mustang to the top of the Empire State Building, there would be some old-school craftsmanship required. With the building being too tall to reach with a portable crane and spire around the top of the narrow deck preventing helicopter delivery, the only possible way of delivery was via elevator. A wood mockup of the smallest elevator in the Empire State Building was built at the DST shop to ensure that everything would fit and that it did not exceed the weight limits of the elevator and observation deck.

To Take a 2015 Ford Mustang 1,000 Feet Above Manhattan, the car was completely stripped down and cleaned up to make sure that it looked absolutely perfect before it was sectioned and painted. The second body was a donor made by DST metal fabricators that helped determine where to make the cuts and where the custom-built tubular steel subframe could fit to hold all of the sections together. After many weeks of fabricating and practice, the DST crew is rested up and ready to assemble and disassemble the 2015 Ford Mustang tomorrow, April 16th. 

The 2015 Ford Mustang will be on the Empire State Building observation deck on April 16-17th.
