2015 Edge Raises Bar for Ford Utility Vehicles

JACKSON, Mich - Once again, Ford Motor Company has proven that their products only continue to get bigger and better. After its reveal on June 24th, it is safe to say that the 2015 Edge has Raised the Bar for Ford Utility Vehicles. The 2015 Edge debuted its new athletic shape in North America and Europe on Tuesday, showing enhancements on everything from the wheels to the roof. Every inch of the Ford Edge has been revamped and reengineered, adding more features and technologies that will give customers a better driving experience than ever before. The new solid body structure and redesigned suspension on the Edge have greatly improved driving dynamics, reducing noise, vibration and other rough characteristics. Ford customers will see that with the 2015 Ford Edge they can throughly enjoy a quieter, smoother ride on their everyday commute as well as be ready to attack when the road opens up!

The 2015 Edge is Ford's first product to feature adaptive steering technology. Adaptive steering adjusts the ratio between a driver's actions at the steering wheel, or the number of turns, and how often the front wheels turn. Ford's adaptive steering continually changes the steering ratio with vehicle speed, which optimizes steering response in all situations. For instance, when the vehicle is heading into a parking spot at a low speed, the vehicle will become more agile and easier to turn. At faster speeds the ride will become more enjoyable because the system will allow the Edge to react more smoothly and precisely to driver input. 

This time around, Ford is all about giving Edge customers plenty of choices. The 2015 Edge will feature three engine options - a standard twin-scroll 2.0-liter EcoBoost® four-cylinder with 245 horsepower, the 3.5-liter V6 engine and the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 on the Sport model. Every engine will be equipped with dual output exhaust and a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shift activation. Paddle-activated SelectShirt gives drivers the ability to manually select gears with race-inspired paddles on the steering wheel. The Edge's six-speed automatic will always be "live in drive", so drivers won't have to worry about selecting sport mode to enable the feature.

The 2015 Edge Raises the Bar for Ford Utility Vehicles, especially when it comes to technology. Several technologies are being offered for the very first time, including adaptive steering, enhanced park assist, side parking sensors and a front camera with a washer. Other key technology features include: hands-free liftgate, lane-keeping system, SYNC® with MyFord Touch®, cross-traffic alert, and much, much more! Ford strives to continuously develop and offer the latest, most advanced technology in the industry. Ford Debuts All-New Inflatable Airbag for 2015 Mustang

JACKSON, Mich - Just when you thought the all-new 2015 Ford Mustang couldn't be any more advanced, Ford Debuts an All-New Inflatable Airbag for the 2015 Mustang that will provide restraint protection within a smaller, lighter package and will even allow for a roomier interior. The new airbag is part of a standard comprehensive safety system which will be introduced later this year. The standard comprehensive safety system includes a package of sensors, safety belt anchor pretensioners, improved exterior lighting and double the number of airbags on the all-new Mustang. 

Ford's Debut of an All-New Inflatable Airbag for the 2015 Mustang did not come easy, the technology required 15 U.S. patents, with still more being filed. Unlike traditional airbag fabric, the new airbag is made up of a pliable, injection-molded plastic bladder and is sandwiched between the inner and outer glove box door panels. In the case of an impact, an inflator fills the bladder and extends the entire glove box outer door panel toward the front passenger's legs. After it has been deployed, the outer door provides cushioning similar to a traditional knee airbag. 

The glove box-integrated airbag is able to operate at a lower inflation pressure because it extends out directly from the instrument panel and distributes the impact load over a larger area than a conventional airbag. The new airbag design is 65 percent lighter with an inflator that is 75 percent smaller than a traditional knee airbag inflator. The airbag's packaging is much more discreet, which gives designers more flexibility in moving the dashboard closer to the windshield and increasing the amount of roominess in the cabin.

Ford Donates Transit Connect to University of Kanas's WellCar Program

JACKSON, Mich - Ford Donates a Transit Connect to the University of Kanas's WellCar Program as the school looks to deliver medical care to rural areas that would regularly require a medical center or doctor's office. For those who live in rural areas, travel time to seek a doctor or health care facility may take hours. The University of Kansas took this issue into their own hands and created the WellCar program, a rolling medical workstation that can provide those in rural areas with testing, diagnosis and treatment and even prescribed medications for non-ambulatory patients. When it came to choosing a vehicle, the University of Kansas was in search of a van that allowed them to communicate information wirelessly for treatment, travel to at least six patients a day and also carry of all the necessary medical equipment. The WellCar vehicle also needed to be functional in order for nurse practitioners to provide an array of comprehensive, prevention-based patient care services. 

It was none other than the Transit Connect which possessed all of the ideal features that the school was looking for. The vehicle has top notch efficiency, cargo capacity and maneuverability that will allow nurse practitioners to provide various medical services. The Transit Connect can also be ordered without windows in the cargo area to enhance security and has the capability to securely transfer medical data through its own Wi-Fi hotspot to a medical center for immediate evaluation. Students in the University of Kansas advanced industrial design and engineering studio will be developing the specifications for the installation of medical equipment, then incorporate the equipment and connectivity into the WellCar Transit Connect. 

Ford Donates a Transit Connect to the University of Kanas's WellCar Program, just one of the four WellCar Transit Connect vans that the school plans to deploy to serve western Kansas. This is not the last we will hear of the WellCar program; the school has already received inquiries about extending the program to Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Nebraska.

Mustang Celebration Continues at Michigan International Speedway

Ford Volunteers Work to Improve Environment on Ford Accelerated Action Day

JACKSON, Mich - Last Thursday was a particularly busy day for Ford employees. By busy, we do not mean they were in and out of meetings all day or swamped with emails. Thursday was a day spent busy within the community as Ford Volunteers Worked to Improve the Environment on Ford Accelerated Action Day! In light of World Environment Day being on Thursday, June 5th, Ford volunteers planted urban vegetable gardens, installed watering systems, constructed storage sheds and landscaped the grounds of various nonprofit organizations around southeast Michigan. Ford employees are trying to improve sustainability not only within the automobile industry, but also within their communities. 

More than 500 Ford employees participate in roughly three dozen community service projects that have been created by Ford's nonprofit partners. Participating agencies shared $46,000 in Ford grants that went towards purchasing tools, plants and other necessary supplies.  The nonprofit partners in southeast Michigan that received up to $5,000 in grants for the projects include:

Alternatives for Girls, Detroit – Built garden shed, painted and decorated child care room

Arbor Hospice, Ann Arbor – Created self-watering planting areas and prepared gardens

Boy Scouts of America, Metamora – Rebuilt yurts and dwelling structure for rustic camping

Community Living Centers, Farmington – Painted office

Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, Highland Park – Installed drip irrigation system and planted urban garden

Detroit Zoo, Royal Oak – Transformed Great Apes habitat entrance into story circle

Habitat Macomb, Mt. Clemens – Constructed sheds, picnic table and paint restore

Habitat Monroe, Monroe – Landscaped three new homes

Haven, Pontiac – Removed carpet and prepared for new carpet installation

Henry Ford Estate, Dearborn – Planted native trees and installed garden benches

International Wildlife Refuge, Grosse Ile – Built accessible overlook deck

Liberty Hill Housing Corp., Detroit and Westland – Landscaped and cleaned up yards

Penrickton Center for Blind Children, Taylor – Rehab privacy fence and play equipment

Starfish Family Services, Inkster – Host year end celebration for students and families

St. Vincent de Paul, Detroit – Installed bookcases and slat walls at thrift store

Vista Maria, Dearborn Heights – Planted trees and landscaped campus

Ford Volunteers Worked to Improve the Environment on Ford Accelerated Action Day by planting, building, painting and also by teaming up with Ford Green IT. Volunteers collected unused computers, printers and other electronic equipment to be recycled. Last year's collection of e-waste kept 63,000 pounds of recycled materials out of landfills. We can't wait to hear how many pounds of e-waste were collected this year!

May Retail Sales Set Records for Fusion, Escape & Lincoln MKZ

JACKSON, Mich - May Retail Sales Set Records for the Ford Fusion, Escape & Lincoln MKZ, some of the best May sales Ford has seen for the Fusion and Escape in 10 years! Throughout the month of May, Ford totaled 254,084 vehicles sold, up 3 percent from a year ago. Retail sales were setting records left and right with 174,889 vehicles sold -a 6 percent increase! The Ford Fusion and Escape had an extremely successful month, having the best May sales Ford has seen since 2004. The Explorer has really made its mark in the midsize utility segment, selling 20,346 vehicles -its best sales month since 2005.

The Ford Fusion set an all-time monthly record with 33,881 vehicles sold, thanks partially to the West region of the U.S. and their increase in Fusion sales. There were 31,896 Ford Escapes sold, which also set an all-time record for the first time ever. Totaling 8,845 vehicles sold, Lincoln sales are up 21 percent for the month of May. MKZ did exceptionally well, breaking last year's record with 3,714 cars sold. There is a bright road ahead for the all-new Lincoln MKC, which alone sold 677 vehicles in final weekend of May.

Each maneuver at a low-speed will require less turning of the steering wheel. At higher speeds, the system actually enhances the steering response, allowing the vehicle to react more smoothly and accurately to driver input. Driver's will feel more comfortable with this system and will find the drive more enjoyable!

Ford's Advanced Steering Technology Makes Driving More Fun because of its precision-controlled actuator that is placed inside of the steering wheel. The actuator is an electric motor and gearing system, that adds or subtracts from the driver's steering inputs.
